Inaugural Southern Cross Partners tertiary scholarship awarded

In early November, Southern Cross Partners awarded its first full tertiary scholarship, and two cash grants to school leavers looking to study finance.

Jenna Hainsworth, from Howick College, received a scholarship for her full tertiary education at AUT, where she will be studying a conjoint degree of Bachelor of Business and Bachelor of International Hospitality Management.

She will also be working at Southern Cross Partners during her four years of study to gain workplace experience, and work placement as part of her studies.

“I am so grateful to have received the Southern Cross Partners Scholarship”, says Jenna Hainsworth. “It has meant the world to me to be given the opportunity to live a financially stress-free student life, allowing me to fully invest in my studies. It has also provided me with the amazing opportunity of interning at Southern Cross Partners to gain work experience and develop new skills. I am so excited for the future ahead.”

Two other Howick College graduates Bruno Danev and Chris Camm also received $5,000 towards their tertiary fees and one-on-one mentoring as part of the Southern Cross Partners programme with Howick College.

The three recipients were chosen by Howick College teachers along with Southern Cross Partners founders Barry and Julia Milward, and Southern Cross Partners managing partner Cameron Harper.

Barry Milward says, “We feel the time is right to give something back to our local community and what better way than to help the future generation by means of educational support in the form of this scholarship. Howick College and Southern Cross Partners share similar values and they’re a local school whose students we want to help achieve success in the future,”

Cameron Harper adds, “Our goal is to help a young person with real potential chase their dreams without starting off in financial strife. We’re looking forward to helping Jenna come out of her studies with no student debt and some applicable industry experience for a head start in the real world.

“As we move on post-COVID, getting a strong education and making your mark on the world will be extremely important - both on an individual level and as part of rebuilding New Zealand’s economy.”

The Southern Cross Partners scholarship is open to any Year 13 student at Howick College who is interested in pursuing a finance degree at a tertiary level.

The scholarship is valued up to $18,000 per year for a maximum of 4 years (totaling up to $72,000) to go towards tuition fees, study related resources and/or student accommodation. This scholarship also includes a 2-week internship each year with Southern Cross Partners.
